NYCxDESIGN 2019: Behind the Robe at the New Statue of Liberty Museum
Posted May 9, 2019
On May 16th, 2019, the highly anticipated Statue of Liberty Museum, with experience and exhibit design by ESI Design, opens to the public. The museum will give the 4.3 million annual visitors to Liberty Island the opportunity to experience the history and grandeur of this colossal figure and consider the presence of liberty in their lives.
On May 15th, ESI Design will join Statue of Liberty Museum partner FXCollaborative, the museum building’s architect, in Times Square as a part of NYCxDESIGN for a behind-the-scenes look at the museum’s creation.
What to Expect: A Sneak Peek at the new Statue of Liberty Museum
ESI Design’s Nick Hubbard, Content and Activity Designer, will be speaking with FXCollaborative’s Nicholas Garrison to share how we created an experience that communicates ‘Liberty’ and that’s welcoming and meaningful for all, regardless of age, culture, language, and accessibility. The talk will also explore the challenges of building on an island in New York Harbor, designing for resiliency and sustainability post Hurricane Sandy, and the issues of creating an interactive, immersive museum experience.
At the new Statue of Liberty Museum, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the history and grandeur of this colossal figure and consider the role of liberty in their world today. The exhibits will provoke insight, stir emotions, and inspire ideas about the Statue of Liberty and the ideals she represents. The museum experience begins in the Immersive Theater with a sweeping film that takes visitors on a cinematic flythrough inside the monument and provides an overview of the story of the Statue, from its origins to present day. The Engagement Gallery allows visitors to delve into stories about the Statue’s construction, history, and global impact through artifacts, media, and interactive experiences. In the Inspiration Gallery, guests express their views of what liberty means to them by adding their self-portrait and collage of inspirational images to the ever-growing Becoming Liberty digital mural. And in a quiet corner visitors see the Statue’s original Torch up close, with the Statue of Liberty herself in the distance, set against a stunning backdrop of the New York skyline.
