An amenity-rich campus that

Embodies the many moods of LA

An activity-focused plaza combined with algorithm-driven media art gives 800 North Brand the happy, healthy, local identity that tenants crave.

The property has a renewed sense of place with a plaza the evokes the nearby mountains and digital art that reflects the city.

Challenge: Built in 1990, 800 North Brand was beginning to show its age with its outdated design and lack of tenant amenities. The building’s plaza was underutilized, and the property lacked street presence and a creative focal point now expected in contemporary offices.

Solution: ESI Design began by creating a new building identity based on the surrounding geography. This language of hills, valleys, arroyos, and mesas informed the creation of a beautiful new multi-purpose plaza and a dynamic media display.

The plaza replicates the feeling of the Verdugo Mountains that overlook Glendale and invites people in through a mixture of amenity zones that expand the workplace outdoors. Each zone is enhanced with custom shading, specialized structures, and unique furniture groups. One zone features a food pavilion and communal seating, another features game equipment and individual lounges, and a third features a café and attendant furniture. At night, dynamic lighting brings the plaza to life and links it to the media art wall in the lobby.

The lobby’s dynamic art installation celebrates the Southern California lifestyle and connects the building interior to the environment outside. A shifting, atmospheric canvas expresses authentic local spirit using “iconic motion.” This transforms still images of local nature, crowds, and highway traffic into moving compositions by combining it with patterns generated in software.

Result: 800 North Brand exemplifies how older buildings can attract new tenants with a new building identity. The diversity of amenities encourages tenants to curate their own journeys and to connect with people over shared interests and activities. Finally, the algorithmic digital art installation ensures the space feels dynamic and continues to reflect the creativity of 800’s tenant base.
