A design that combines

local tech and nature

Flows of computer code combine with the patterns of local waterways to create a sense of place.

Through poetry, lighting, and graphics, 160 West Santa Clara tells the story of Silicon Valley.

Opportunity: Beacon Capital Partners wanted to revitalize the building to attract tech tenants, invoke the spirit of San Jose, and make their property a destination.

Solution: Using placemaking, ESI designed a dynamic LED lighting experience for the building lobby and its oversize entrance portal, creating a memorable and awe-inspiring welcome moment for tenants and visitors. The LEDs shine through a custom perforated metal wall piece that runs the length of the lobby and reaches from floor to ceiling. The perforations, composed of the ones and zeros of binary code, form an aerial image of waterways in the Santa Clara Valley. The code itself spells out the poem “It’s been a long time,” by Bay Area poet Joanne Kyger. The design visually references the natural environment around San Jose and the tech industry that drives the city.

Result: According to the Silicon Valley Business Journal, 160 West Santa Clara sold in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic for a price 30% higher than Beacon Capital Partners paid for it just two years prior — a testament to the power of placemaking design.
