A dramatic, eye-catching, and surprising

new attraction for downtown Edmonton

Oversize digital boxes suspend from the ceiling, transforming the city’s newest lobby redevelopment into an immersive digital art destination.

Prisms suspends fully-realized 3D worlds above visitors’ heads in massive LED boxes.

Opportunity: Edmonton is Canada’s fastest growing city, with a reputation as “forward-thinking, youthful, and cosmopolitan.” The Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) and Epic Investment Services came to ESI Design to help them transform the office and retail development HSBC Place, home to AIMCo's future headquarters. They wanted to both attract tenants and fit in better with the new nearby, pedestrian-friendly arena and entertainment district.

Solution: ESI Design created a striking digital media installation for the lobby that is visible through the floor-to-ceiling glass facade. Suspended from the ceiling, these six 260-square-foot LED boxes transform the city’s newest lobby redevelopment into an immersive digital art destination.

Like jewels in a jewel box, the installation, titled Prisms, mixes hyperlocal imagery with abstract art. It shows scenes inspired by Edmonton, the nighttime sky, and the ocean, and incorporates live data including time of day, season and weather.

Creating content for 5-sided 3D forms rather than for a flat surface, presented a unique design challenge: It needed to give the illusion of depth and look convincing from every angle. ESI created content for the displays, using techniques from video game design to accomplish the seamless result.

The boxes are complemented by floor-to-ceiling LED columns that lead visitors to the property’s retail mall.

Result: Prisms, the city’s first digital art installation, showcases the growth and opportunity occurring at HSBC Place and in downtown Edmonton.
