Opportunity: JMB Realty Corporation invited ESI Design to create an experience for the Magnificent Mile shopping center that would attract customers and entice target retailers.
Solution: ESI transformed the mall into a sleek, upscale oasis, featuring a dynamic, awe-inspiring 190-foot-long media ceiling. The stunning ceiling, visible from all seven floors of the atrium, gives the mall the “wow” factor that JMB was looking for. Trompe l’oeil media effects make the ceiling panels appear to open up and then close again, evoking the feeling of an outdoor space where people want to linger. Ultra high-definition content, filmed with the latest camera technology, makes the rustling trees and open sky feel real.
In another mode, the tenant names and products appear in a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of color and pattern. The media program can be easily customized by building management to feature brand content and special events.
At the Michigan Avenue entrance, a new luminous bronze threshold announces the redefined mall experience. Inside, ESI Design helped create visual focus by strategically stripping down distracting ornamentation, like molding and sconces, and designing a signage system that brings the store names forward towards the atrium, making them visible from all angles.
Result: The resulting redesign helps the mall attract customers who might otherwise shop online and stand out in a neighborhood with countless retailers competing for attention.
